Our findings

We found that all those interviewed were aware of the LGBT community in Newcastle and what LGBT stands for. Only some people were able to comment confidently on whether Newcastle was a positive place. Although unable to comment definitively due to the small scale of our project and the number of people we spoke to, we suggest that the LGBT community still lacks some visibility in Newcastle in terms of people being aware of some of the issues the LGBT community faces.

A woman who identified as lesbian said in her opinion Newcastle was fairly negative towards LGBT people. She outlined feelings of exclusion and difference. What was interesting is that only one other person was aware of similar issues.

In addition, all but one person we interviewed knew about the Pride Festival in Newcastle. All those that knew about Pride thought that the event was a positive thing and so was the city’s promotion of the event. However, some felt that Pride, itself did not achieve a better understanding of the LGBT community and their fight for quality and freedom of expression, but was rather just a party.

To give a definitive answer to the question of whether Newcastle is a positive place for the LGBT community, our study and research would have had to cover a larger number of people. Based on our limited results we found that there are still relatively basic issues, such as inclusivity, that Newcastle needs to overcome.

Do you know what LGBT stands for?

Do you think Newcastle is a positive place for the LGBT community, if so why?

Would you say that pride is a positive thing for the LGBT community?
